WEEK 8 DISCUSSION 2 Discussion: Treatment of Neurocognitive Disorders Introduction Cognitive functions are a significant public health concern in the United States. The DSM-5 has replaced these disorders involving thinking and other cognitive domains with categories of mild and major neurocognitive disorders. The main distinction between the two is that in its mild form, a neurocognitive disorder does not significantly affect the ability of individuals to perform their daily activities (Sadock et al., 2014). Clients diagnosed with major neurocognitive disorders have a severe problem that demands assistant. Although neurocognitive disorders can be caused by conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, it can also result from reversible medical conditions such as endocrine disorders. Diagnostic Criteria The endocrine system and nerves system is closely interrelated, and both are involved in maintaining homeostasis. Thus, endocrine dysfunctions such disorders of the thyroid, parathyroid, the adrenal gland can cause various neurocognitive manifestations such as dementia among the elderly. The endocrine system produces chemical substances that are transported through the bloodstream and control most of the activities in the body. These substances, such as
