F-1 PRE-COMPLETION OPTIONAL PRACTICAL TRAINING (OPT) What is Pre-completion OPT? Optional Practical Training (OPT)- Up to 12 months of part-time or full-time employment that is usually used while a student still has coursework requirements remaining for degree completion. However, graduate students can also use Pre-completion OPT while only in thesis/dissertation phase if they so choose. OPT employment MUST be in the field of study and initial employment may begin only after an Employment Authorization Document (EAD card) has been received from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Who is eligible for Pre-completion OPT? 1). F-1 students who have completed at least 1 academic year of study in the U.S. 2). Students in legal F-1 status 3). F-1 students who still have coursework remaining. 4). F-1 students who have completed coursework and have only project, thesis, or dissertation remaining. o Note: Most students in this category choose to apply for post-completion OPT because it is usually the most beneficial. Schedule an appointment with an F-1 advisor if considering Pre-completion OPT at this time. 5). Students who have not used 12 months of full-time Curricular Practical Training. 6). Bachelors or non-thesis option Masters students can only use full-time pre-completion OPT during school breaks (i.e. winter break, summer break). When should I apply for Pre-completion OPT? It is recommended to apply three months before your employment start date since OPT processing can take up to 3 months. What are my enrollment requirements while on Pre-Completion OPT? If on part-time pre-completion OPT, you must maintain full-time enrollment. If on full-time pre-completion OPT, you must maintain two hours of enrollment. Am I eligible for the 17-month STEM Extension and/or Cap Gap Extension following Pre-completion OPT? No. You are not eligible for these benefits after pre-completion OPT. (These benefits are only allowed after post-completion OPT). Can I use some months of Pre-completion OPT and then later switch to Post-completion OPT? Yes. You could use some of your 12 month OPT time as pre-completion OPT and then later apply again for post-completion OPT. You would have to file a new application and pay the OPT filing fee again. Example: You could use 5 months of pre-completion OPT and then apply for post-completion OPT for the remaining 7 months. Then, following the 7 months of post-completion OPT, you would be eligible for the 17- month STEM Extension and/or Cap Gap Extension (if applicable). Can I travel during a pending Pre-completion OPT application or during my Pre-completion OPT authorization? Yes. Travel is as normal during this time because you are still a continuing student.
