Note-A-Rific: EM Spectrum Just like any wave, EM waves have particular wavelengths and frequencies. Since the velocity of any EM wave is always 3.0 x 10 8 m/s (in vacuum), if you know one of the values, you can calculate the other using the formula v = f λ . Because the velocity of light is such an important constant, we use the symbol “c” to represent it. The range of the different frequencies of EM waves is shown in your text book on page 716 – 717. You do NOT have to memorize this entire table of facts, figures, and numbers. You do need to know the order of the different types of EM waves (radiation) and some basic facts about each. The following gives you an overview in order of increasing frequency… I suggest you read this while having your text book open to pages 716 and 717. Low Frequency AC Very weak, low frequency waves given off by any electrical appliance in your home. You might have noticed warning labels on electronics about it interfering with radio signals. o For you in your home, the biggest worry is that there will be static on your cordless phone when somebody turns on the vacuum cleaner.
