Chase Machemehl October 11, 2007 Mrs. JoAnne Scales Section 10, Thursday 1-4pm Materials Science and Engineering Vanderbilt University Nashville, TN 37235 Dear Mrs. Scales, The following report details the results of the lab experiment performed Thursday October 4 th , 2007. The purpose of the experiment is to demonstrate and analyze fatigue failure. Due to the length of time required to conduct these tests, they are not performed. Instead, results of the experiments are delivered to the students for analysis. Students are to determine the following: an equation for calculating the maximum fiber stress of a standard specimen, stress data for the 7079-T6 aluminum, time in hours required to perform the tests for both sets of data, and graphs representing the stress vs. number of cycles for each material. Because the experiment was not conducted in the lab, the procedure consisted of an educational lecture and delivery of the pertinent data. Students were informed of the four point rotational bending experienced in the R.R. Moore fatigue test machine. This
