Tajah McQueen, Madelyn Smith, Chris Philpott Biology 104 11 Bill Persons August 31, 2011 [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] Title: Measuring Rates of Photosynthesis Definition of Terms: In this lab we were assigned the task of studying photosynthesis in spinach leaf discs in different amounts of sodium bicarbonate and different shades of light. This is a written report of the procedures we took and our findings. We were given a list of words to define to help us throughout the lab. The words were: 1. Photosynthesis is the production of substances such as sugar from carbon dioxide and water which occurs in green plant cells (Merriam-Webster). Plants need photosynthesis to survive. 2. Chlorophyll is the green coloring found in chloroplasts in plant cells (Merriam- Webster). Chlorophyll is what gives plants their color. 3. Stomata are mouth-like openings in the plants (Merriam-Webster). The stomata allow things to come in and out of the plant. 4. Spongy Mesophyll is the lower layer of the mesophyll (Merriam-Webster). The stomata are located in the spongy mesophyll . 5. Palisade Mesophyll is the upper layer of the mesophyll (Merriam-Webster). Chloroplasts are in the palisade mesophyll . Hypothesis:
