About data analysis Statistics is the science of data It involves collecting, classifying, summarizing, organizing, analyzing and interpreting numerical information The goal of statistics is to develop understanding of the real world and to predict the future. This course will review statistical principles of data analysis using computerized statistical analysis procedures Statistical Analysis System (SAS) 8.2/9.1.3
Science and Statistics The phenomena within the science The associations among those phenomena The causal relationships among the phenomena You can't analyze data without a context that lets you understand what the meaning of the data are You can't analyze data without a goal or a set of goals. There is no point in analyzing garbage.

Role of Statistician Design the experiment so that the questions of interest are clear, and what needs to be done to answer them is clear Collect the data in such a fashion that they can be used to answer the questions of interest Analyze the data to yield the answers to the questions. why do we need statisticians to do this? Why can't the doctor, etc. .. do it.
Are they statisticians? The statistician whose knowledge is limited to running software and reporting the output in some kind of technobabble, without any real understanding of what he or she is doing. The statistician who knows all the math, but has no idea of how to apply it.

What is expected from this course? To explore fundamental ideas in statistics as they come about in applied problems. To review some major techniques used in applied work To get hands-on experience in planning a data analysis, carrying it out and communicating its results to non- statisticians.
