Basic Concepts of Interpersonal Communication ! We communicate what and who we are. ! Language can be used to conceal & reveal. ! Much of our interpersonal communication centers on our wanting others to act, think, or feel as we do; in other words, much of it is an attempt at persuasion. ! Meaning is in people, not in words. ! We cannot not communicate. ! We cannot always have the same understandings and feelings as others. ! We each have a public °self± and a private °self±.

When we decide to self disclose, it needs to be appropriate to the communication context and type and depth of relationship. Self disclosure is often reciprocal and is more likely to occur in one on one conversations , small groups and private settings .

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
