Genetics We all accept the idea that our physical appearance is strongly dependent on our genetic endowment. But personality traits just seem different. Thoughts? If the nature/nurture debate is over, why does behavioral genetics exist? Because teasing them apart can reveal some very useful information about personality

Across people, not within Heritability quotient : Estimates the proportion of variability in a given characteristic that can be attributed to genetic differences between people. The media is notoriously bad at this. A heritability quotient of .8 means that 80% of the observed trait variability is due to genetic variability It makes no sense to talk about heritability quotients within people

The God gene Or, “Don’t Take Single Gene Statements Seriously” Why are some folks atheists? Simple: some have instructions in their DNA for the coding of the VMAT2 gene (“self- transcendence”). Most scientists don’t take this notion seriously, though the idea that religiosity is moderately heritable does have merit.

Psychologists love twins This is how we parse nature from nurture Acquire a sample of ½ MZ twins and ½ DZ twins Correlate trait measure scores within dyads Compare effect sizes between MZ and DZ twins But this method (clearly) isn’t flawless. Twins share the same intrauterine environment People treat MZ twins more similarly than DZ twins h 2 = 2( r mz r dz )

On to the good stuff Punch line: personality traits are at least moderately heritable. Across many different countries and over time, heritability quotients for the big 5 range from about .30 to .60 That’s nothing to shake stick at Nonaddative genetic variance Emergenesis
