What is body image? “Collective picture of the body as seen through the mind’s eye” The internal representation of your outer appearance How YOU see yourself when looking in the mirror Made up of : Feelings Perceptions Thoughts What you believe about your appearance How you feel about your body Its how you view your body and appearance, NOT how others view you But, others’ behavior influences your body image and you influence others’ body image

Another way to think about body image The type of relationship you have with your body : Friendly? Hostile? Tense? Loving? Ingredients of a satisfactory relationship : Respect Trust Affection Reasonable expectations
