History First settled in pre-Roman times, trading, political, and military power Founded by Duke Berchtold V of Zähringen on the River Aare in 1191 The Zytglogge tower originally marked the western boundary (1191-1256), then Käfigturm until 1345, and then Christoffeltum until 1622 1218- made an Imperial Free City by the HRE Frederick II 1353- joined Swiss Confederation Became the largest city state north of the Alps by invading Aargau in 1415 and Vaud in 1536 During the Thirty Years War big and small Schanze (entrenchment) built to protect area of peneninsula 1798- occupied by French during French Revolutionary Wars 1831- became the capital of Canton of Bern
