Production Management Schedule Farrowing Systems 1. One litter system 2. Two litter system 3. Multiple farrowings - multiple groups of sows One litter system (all females on the farm in one group) a. All gilt system. b. All females in 1 group all farrow 1 time per year. c. Farrow out on range. Use wooded land or submarginal land. d. Farrow gilt 1 time then sell after weaning. e. Perpetuate program by saving daughters from each farrowing. f. Breed in January - farrow in May or June. g. Use little or no shelter and minimal amounts of equipment. h. System is at the mercy of weather conditions. No longer a tax break. 2-litter System a. Have all females in one group i. A mix of gilts and multi-litter sows (3 sows: 1 gilt) ii. Add replacements to the sow herd once each year select gilts on August - to farrow in March b. Each sow or gilt farrows 2 times per year c. Farrowings 150-180 days apart March - September or February - August d.
