Gianna Menacher English 1302 Professor McCormick May 7, 2020 The Beauty In Time Richard Wilbur is an American poet, who was one of the most honored poets of the 20th century. Wilbur was the second poet laureate consultant of the United States from 1987-1988. He also won the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award for his collection Things of This World: Poems in 1957 and a second Pulitzer for New and Collected Poems. His poems are notable to be about love, nature, and art. Wilbur’s poems are known to be full of passion and have lots of emotional aspects that move the reader. I will be discussing my view/analysis of Richard Wilbur’s poem The Beautiful Changes . To begin, I will first start off by talking about Wilbur’s background and life. Richard Purdy Wilbur was born on March 1, 1921, in New York City. Yet, he grew up in New Jersey. His parents, Lawrence and Helen Wilbur, were both American middle class individuals. His father had run away at the age of sixteen to study art, and his mother was raised by a family of journalists. Richard’s parents' background eventually had an impact on him, and Richard dreamed of becoming a newspaper cartoonist, a mix of his parents’ interests. He was also very close to his younger brother, Lawrence, as they would hang out with the neighborhood children in the countryside where they lived.
