1.03 Concept Synthesis: Exploring the Hero Two Characteristics Two characteristics by Emerson that I believe a hero must possess would be both self-trust and a mind of such balance. Which is Beowulf more like? In my opinion Beowulf is more like Emerson's hero rather than the Christian hero. Beowulf stood up for his people to ensure that they are okay. He was willing to risk his own life to fight Grendel just to protect other people whether he knew them or not. He had self-trust and a mind of such balance throughout the whole time. In the excerpt is says, "Friend-lord of folks, so far have I sought thee, That I may unaided, my earlmen assisting me, This brave-modded war-band, purify Heorot.", which indicates that Beowulf was willing to fight Grendel without any kind of weapon. It also says, "The foe I must grapple, fight for my life then, Foeman with foeman: he fain must rely on The doom of the Lord whom death layeth hold of.". To me this indicates that Beowulf is saying that he will fight for his life and rely on the doom of the Lord who he picks to die. Although Beowulf is fearful of what
