Asian Americans Experience (HUM 2514-13877) Spring 2012 CLASS TIMES: TR 2-3.15 pm CLASS: McBryde 322 Dr. Suchitra Samanta Office: Lane 255 Office Hours: Monday through Thursday, 12.30-1.30 pm E-mail:  ssamanta@vt.edu Office Phone: 540-231-7825 COURSE OBJECTIVES Are Asian Americans, in their vast diversity, comfortably part of the  mosaic  of peoples who live in  the United States? Are their various cultures, religious beliefs, and social values understood and accepted  by dominant cultural and racial norms? Or is there pressure to conform, to blend into the “melting pot?” Is  that pressure different by age, by gender, for first generation immigrants as compared with following  generations? Who defines what the “melting pot” is? These are only some of the questions we intend to  ask in this course. Ultimately, however, the course is about a personal journey of discovery that those of  us who are Asians as well as Americans need to take to know who we are, how we fit in, which part of us  wants to add to the “melting pot,” and which part of us holds on to our historical and cultural uniqueness.  How do we translate our difference, how do we build bridges so that those “different” from us understand  and are enriched by what we bring to “America,” how are we ourselves enriched by the country in which  we live and which we call home?  REQUIRED TEXTS 1) Garrod Kilkenny , eds. 2007. Balancing Two Worlds: Asian American College   Students Tell Their Life Stories . Cornell University Press. 2) Lee , Joann Faung Jean. 1992. Asian Americans. Oral Histories …New York: The New Press 3) Zhou Gatewood , eds. 2007. 2 nd  ed. Contemporary Asian America. A   Multidisciplinary Reader . New York, NY: New York University Press.  4) ONLINE  readings on  Scholar , under “Resources/Course Readings” ( 20% ) 4 Page, assigned  Paper   ONE  [ Due 2/23/2012 ] ( 20% ) 4 Page, assigned  Paper   TWO  [ Due 3/22/2012 ] ( 25% ) In-class  ORAL PRESENTATION.  ( Proposal   paragraph   due   3/27/2012, with 5 point  penalty off OP grade if you miss deadline ). This will be an in-class  15   minute  Samanta Page 1
