Bello Assignment # 5, Speaker Specification Full Name:____________________________ NetID:_________________________ Research Paper Description: For this assignment you are expected to research and compare specifications of two speakers. Please record the results of your research in the form of a short report (max 4pp). Topic: In demonstrations and experiments we have discussed and listened to three different types of speaker systems: • Near Field monitors (the speakers mounted to the wall in studio F) • Long Throw loudspeakers (the JBL Eons) • Hypersonic/Directional speakers (as heard in the transducer demonstration) While there are numerous other speakers, for example, home theatre speakers, clock‐radio speakers, plasma arc, the speaker types selected for this assignment are most likely to be relevant to your future careers in music technology. For example you may use near field monitors for studio applications, long throw loudspeakers for live sound applications and hyper directional speakers for advanced research topics and/or art installations. Near field and long throw speaker systems involve various classifications of speakers discussed in the lectures. They are mostly moving‐coil drivers. Some employ active crossover networks, some passive. All have enclosures, but of different types. Hypersonic/Directional speakers may use dynamic or electrostatic transducers and vary greatly with regards to enclosures and preamplifier audio processing. Pick one of these types of speaker system and compare: • two products which differ in price by more than 50%(what makes one speaker so much more expensive than the other?), or • two products similar in price but competing for the same market (the top two most popular speakers for your given application). To make a scientific comparison, use published specifications and measurements rather than opinion and hearsay. Please cite all sources of images, facts, measurements and any other information used in your report. Emphasize the following aspects in your comparison: • Size of individual drivers • Number of Drivers • Size of Enclosure • Enclosure Type • Rated Power: Nominal/Continuous • Rated Power: Maximum • Impedance (for passive speakers only) • Active/Passive Crossover network • Crossover Frequency or Frequencies • Frequency Response • Sensitivity • Maximum SPL without distortion o At what frequencies is this tested? • Shielded/unshielded (can they me used next to video monitors) • Directivity (directional radiation/projection at various frequencies) • Suggested retail price Questions and Analysis: In the discussion of your report please address the following: • Which specifications (other than price) are most pertinent to your application? • Which speaker would you chose if price were no object? • If price is an issue, what would you be sacrificing in terms of specifications? • If you had access to these speakers, what would you test to inform your decision?
