1/12/12 Dance Appreciation Beginning of Ballet: Renaissance Italy and France loved ballet being introduced in courts o Catherine de’ Medici brought ballet into the French courts o Only males- masked and dressed-up extravagantly Dancers were courtiers- people liked watching their friends dance o Jumps and leaps in ballet came after this time o Dances lasted till 3 AM o Quickly spread to England and Spain where even more dances were thought of o Courts before this had entertainment combining painting, poetry, music, and dance Cardinal Mazaran o Promoted Italian influence in French courts- opera and dance o Raised Louis XIV o Taught King dance, art, highest quality of education at the time. o Imported Giovanni Baptista Lulli – ballet master King Louis XIV o Codified ballet Took a bunch of different court dances and put them together to make ballet. o Father died when he was 5 years old.
