1/24/12 Dance Appreciation Music was created with a particular dance in mind. o Language of music- italian Story ballet- different parts o Classical ballet- no men on pointe- unless it’s a humorous aspect Do this to get strength and flexibility o Don Quixote- specific example o grande pas de deux- (every classical story ballet) adage (2 dancers- male and female)- walking tempo, lyrical, requires agility to perform male variation (1)- man’s sole, big jumps and turns, sometimes dancing faster- up to musicians discretion female variation (1)- petite allegro- small, intricate detailed steps, lots in a small amount of time grande allegro (2) – brisk walking past, quicker, bigger 32 Fouette’ Turns- women; grande turns- man o Coda- three minute retelling of ballet. Two National Ballet Companies in America- arguably best in the world o Have very old ballets as well as new contemporary ones that currently being choreographed. o
