Modern Dance in America o Isadora Duncan & Ruth St. Denis – first American dancers to break away from ballet Both different types American modern dance movement 20s Used their bodies as instruments to express emotions like passion, fear, joy, and grief o American musical comedy- started to influence the break from ballet – draws on ballet, modern, tap, and ethnic folk dancing o Martha Graham- leading dancers and choreographers of the American modern dance movement Began dancing under Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn Revolutionary and controversial form Wanted to give insight into human condition through her dances In- Class: Modern or Aesthetic Dance: huge rebellion against classical dance o Began in Europe- brought to America because Europe was not a huge fan and still liked the old-fashion dance Appreciated more in America o Brought different attention and focus to the body
