CFC Reactions Heterogeneous reactions on polar stratospheric clouds (PSC’s) convert reservoir species such as HCl and ClONO2 into active chlorine species such as Cl2 and HOCl.  These are photolyzed by sunlight when Spring returns to the Antarctic. ClONO2(g) + HCl(s) --> Cl2(g) + HNO3(s) ClONO2(g) + H2O(s) --> HOCl(g) + HNO3(s) HOCl(g) + HCl(s) --> Cl2(g) + H2O(s)
