Proton-induced x-ray emission (PIXE) functions by analyzing x-rays emitted from an excited sample. A Van de Graaf accelerator creates charged particles, usually protons. Accelerating negatively charged hydrogen ions toward a high-voltage terminal at a positive potential produces the protons. The typical accelerator operates with a terminal voltage between 1.5 MeV and 3 MeV. The electrons are stripped off, leaving the protons, which are focused into a beam. A ground potential attracts the protons, which pass through the sample to be analyzed. An electron is ejected from the innermost electron shell of the sample by the high-energy protons. The ejected electron is excited to a higher outer shell and quickly drops to fill the vacancy in the innermost shell of electrons. An x-ray is emitted as the electron drops from the higher energy level to the lower energy level. 2 . . . to this paragraph Proton-induced x-ray emission (PIXE) functions by producing a spectrum of x-rays emitted from atoms excited by a proton beam. To produce the proton beam that induces the x-ray emission, a Van de Graaf accelerator creates negatively charged hydrogen ions and accelerates them toward a high-voltage terminal with a positive electrical potential. The positive potential strips electrons from the hydrogen ions, leaving bare protons, which are then focused into a beam and accelerated toward a ground potential. Before reaching the ground potential, the proton beam passes through the sample and ejects electrons from the innermost electron shell of the sample atoms. Electrons from higher energy shells then drop to the vacant innermost shell, releasing x-rays.
