Control, attract attention Alfred Alder  –Individual Psychology “The important thing is not what one is born with, but what use one makes of that  equipment” 5 Basic Assumptions  1. All behavior has a social meaning Peers, work, etc. = diff. communication  2. All behavior is goal-directed not necessarily realistic goals 3. Each person is indivisible w/ a unique behavior pattern 4. We strive to overcome inferiority we have something (bad eyesight, limp, etc) that is inferior 5. Behavior is a result of subjective perceptions we have our real self and our perceived self Some of Adler’s Concepts Overcoming Inferiority Compensation  weak in one area (physically) so strive in something else(academics)  Overcompensation Malformed foot, ice skating to support, overcompensate and become Olympian ice
