Lecture 3: Matches on Action: pattern on action Short films will have many patterns. Modes of film production: 1 person team in early production. 1907- shift, proto-hollywood-> distinction btw director, producer, and editor. Lengths of film increased, more complex. Filmakers (1) linear chronological storytelling time moving forward. (2) intertitlels. (1915’s dialogue titles continue) Narrtive Desgin and Classic Hollywood Cinema Narrative form- organized so apart of films are related to eachother through a series of casually related events related by time and place. Process of narration- a plot that withholds, conveys story information. - some story info is not displayed, in citizen kane the 1 st marriage event is referred to by a diaglogue. Classical Hollywood Cinema- The form assumes the following: (1) active goal oriented plot protagonist . (2) Film’s action comes from individual characters. (causal agents) (3) Narrative moves along chain of desire. (4) Plot moves by means of causes and effect produced by protagonists efforts to achieve
