Golub 1 Dani Golub 29 September 2011 Comm Arts 100 Alyx Vesey The Importance of Campus Safety General Purpose: To inform Specific Purpose Statement: To inform my class about the safety risks in college to people and property, and to suggest precautionary measures to keep safe. Central Idea: College campuses nationwide present safety risks, some hidden and some obvious. To counter those risks, most schools offer many resources to help keep their students safe. Method of Organization: Topical Order I. Introduction. A. A few weeks ago at my sorority house a girl came and spoke about her friend. Last summer her friend, Lauren, mysteriously vanished at Indiana University. She was attending summer school at IU’s main Bloomington campus. She lived in an apartment near campus three blocks from a friend. Since she felt safe in her town, late one night Lauren decided to walk home alone from her friend’s apartment. Somewhere along that short walk she disappeared. Even with full-scale search efforts by IU police, to this day no one knows where Lauren is or what happened to her. Her friends and family are distraught, puzzled, and horrified. Their lives will never be the same. 1. Bloomington, Indiana is similar to Madison. It’s known as a college town. Like Madison, its streets appear safe and secure. In both towns, it’s easy to get comfortable after learning one’s way around. B. Using campus security and making safe choices are important to every one of us. In fact, as addressed later, “street smarts” enabled me to help friends dodge a run-in with danger on State Street a few weeks ago. 1. Concern for safety matters, regardless of age, gender, or race 2. Unfortunately too many college students believe they are invincible. Nationwide statistics prove that is far from the truth. 3. Although Madison may seem safe, our guards should never come down. 4. Nobody wants to lose a best friend or family member, or be a victim like Lauren. C. Because I am a black belt, personal safety is an extremely important part of my life. I hope to share some of my own ideas along with the ideas of others about risks on campus, precautions we can take, and self-defense tips.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
