Practical Exam Review Guide Lab 1: Measurements and Observations o Dew point temperature-which is the temperature where water will precipitate out of the air o Wet Bulb temperature- the temperature required to evaporate water off of a surface o Pressure and height effects on pressure- pressure decreases with increasing altitude. Lower pressures usually indicate cooler temperatures and moist air, where higher pressures indicate higher temperatures and dryer air. o Wind Speed and Direction-The instrument used to observe wind speed is called an anemometer (say that five times fast), and the wind direction is measured with a weather vane. One of the most important parts to remember about wind direction is that the wind barb points in the direction that the wind is coming from. o Station Model symbols- Lab 2: Energy Transfer o Advection-is the transfer of heat in the horizontal direction o Convection- is the transfer of heat by the mass movement of a fluid (such as water and air) in the vertical direction (up and down)

o Conduction- is the transfer of heat from molecule to molecule within a substance. The molecules must be in direct contact with each other o Radiation- is the travel of energetic particles or waves through a kind of medium to heat it up o Latent Heating- Latent heat is the amount of energy released or absorbed by a substance during a phase change Lab 3: Clouds o Lapse Rates-Since the primary heat source for the lower atmosphere (troposphere) is the ground, temperature decreases with height . The rate at this happens is called the lapse rate, and is measured in degrees C per kilometer. Basically if a parcel gets high enough, it will cool enough to become saturated and can form a cloud. o cumulus – clouds with vertical development o cirrus – clouds that are fibrous or hair-like o stratus – clouds that lye in flat layer o nimbus – rain cloud o Unsaturated vs. Saturated- unsaturated is 10 C/km and saturated is 8 C/km o Cloud base (LCL)- where they meet for the first time Lab 4: Fronts o Air masses-a large fairly homogeneous reservoir of air o When two air masses come in contact with each other a transition zone
