Dani Golub J201 8 February 2012 The Unbeautiful Game The article, “The Unbeautiful Game,” by Adam Gopnik reveals the secret, dark world infecting pro-football. What seems to be all fun and games is actually a corrupt, sad environment. The author starts by explaining how one loses sight of the reality of the game by watching on television rather than live in person. The reality of the game involves crushing impact and widespread injuries. However, almost none of the pain and suffering is captured by the TV camera lens, which is designed to entertain its audience. Instead, cameramen, directors, and producers turn the field into a stage and the game into a showcase. The editing camouflages the players’ and coaches’ real emotions. Following TV contracts, broadcasters force players and coaches to act, speak, and even dress to maximize entertainment value. Pro-football was once a game full of fun and laughter.
