Com Arts 250 20:58 Ideology- a system of ideas Ideas that we perceive as “natural” and which we unquestioningly accept. Need to question the meanings and values that people attach to media and  culture – why is one media text better than another? What do we mean by  “better” anyway? Dominant ideology- set of prevailing ideas that exclude or normalize those  that don’t fit in. Methods of Studying the Media The “integrated approach” o Model of media and culture as a circuit o Embraces the mess Culture as a map Media and culture cannot be placed in a hierarchical order (high/low,  good/bad) – it is a complex terrain with interconnected flows and obstacles

The “New” Media 1/26/12 20:58 More outlets are available which increases the possibility for more fragmentation. Media habits are increasingly mobile, often driven by information and knowledge. Expectations of immediacy and vast amounts of info. Late 1800’s was the first time that information traveled faster than  transportation. Erosions in the distinction between producers and users. Tensions in new media “Blue Skies” optimism-Look how awesome this will be! Examples o o Moral Panics- OMG, look how dangerous this is! Examples o Women, literacy, and novels o http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxfhInhkvtMConcept: “Technological Determinism” Idea that technology alone drives development of society’s structure. Technology’s “effects” on society are inherent & inevitable; change shaped by  technology itself, not the people who use it. Do we change technology, or does technology change us? o Degrees of both?
