Rhetorical analysis shows how the words, phrases, images, gestures, performances, texts, films, etc. that people use to communicate work, how well theywork, and how the artifacts, as discourse, inform and instruct, entertain and arouse, and convince and persuade the audience; as such, discourse includes the possibilityof morally improving the reader, the viewer, and the listener.[1]Critical analysis is probably what you think of first when you hear the wordanalysis. Youprobably wrote analyses of poems or stories in high school, or you may have even analyzedfilms or advertisements. Analysis of a specific artifact is calledcritical analysisor critiqueCritical thinking skill analysis is the process of methodically breaking something down togain a better understanding of it. Analysis also includes the ability to connect pieces ofinformation as the basis for generalization or explanation. Analytic assignments incollege often couple analysis with the critical thinking skills of interpretation andevaluation.Analysis can be applied to content but can also cover form, function, and context. Forexample, an analysis assignment in an art appreciation class might ask you to analyzethe subject and iconography of a painting, but also expect you to analyze the use ofshape, space, color, and texture (form), as well as the artist’s intended purpose(function) and the culture/time period in which the work was created (context). While each academic discipline characterizes the analytic process to suit its needs, theessential skills of analysis are the following:1.Deconstructing information or artifacts into component parts2.Uncovering relationships among those parts3.Determining motives, causes, and underlying assumptions4.Making inferences and finding evidence to support generalizationsBarrier 1:Analysis might challenge my worldview. The purpose of analysis is to understand something better or more deeply, so as you analyze an idea or issue, your thinking may change and evolve. Deeper learning or understanding is valuable. It exposes falsehoods andmoves us closer to truth. A good strategy for overcoming this barrier is to approach analysis with an open mind.
