Unit 1: The Chemistry of Life AP Biology – Chapter 2 – The Chemical Context of Life – Pages 30 – 45 Concept 2.1: Matter consists of chemical elements and compounds 3. Define, and give an example of, the following: a. Matter- takes up space and has mas b. Element- cannot be broken down to other substances by chemical reactions c. Compound- two + different elements in a fixed ration 4. What are essential elements of life? List the essential elements. 25/92 natural elements are essential: C+H+O+N=96% living matter P+S+Ca+K=4% remaining 5. What are trace elements of life? List some trace elements. Trace elements are those required by an organism in small organism. ex. Fe, Co, Mn, etc. Concept 2.2: Structure of Atoms 6. Draw and label a helium atom. p. 33 figure 2.5 7. Define, and give an example of, the following: a. Atomic number- number of protons and electrons in atom (#p=#e) b. Atomic mass- approx of total mass of atom (mass number) c. Mass number - sum of P + N in the nucleus d. Isotopes – elements in which they have same number of protns, but different atomic forms with more neutrons thereby having greater mass. e. Radioactive isotopes – nucleus decays spontaneously, giving off particles and energy, changing # of P’s and transforming atom to different element. 6.
