Esther Kang September 27, 2010 Section D1 Assignment – Lab 3 Biological Molecules 1. The reagent I used to measure the sugar concentration in this lab was 3, 5 – dinitrosalicyclic acid, which is also known as DNS. The DNS reacts with the carbonyl functional group. 2. The reagent I used to measure the protein concentration in this lab is the biuret. The biuret bonds to the peptide bond in the amino acid chain. 3. The protein concentration be for a solution with an absorbance of .77 would be 9.32 mg/mL. a. Work: C s / C u = A s / A u b. 2.3/ x = .19 / .77 = 9.32 mg/mL 4. Patient number 3’s urine appeared to contain hemoglobin. If time had permitted, I would have quantified the amount of hemoglobin in this individual’s urine by using the spectrophotometer and the electromagnetic spectrum. Using these products, I would be able to determine the reddish wavelength and the absorbency of the hemoglobin. Also, I could use the biuret, the standard curve, or just looking at the color. In the blank, there would be the water and the biuret.
