Carly Geller 9/21/11 Section 4 Aaron Informative Speech How to Resist the Infamous “Freshman 15” Specific Purpose Statement: To inform my audience on the prevalence of the “freshman 15” and how to refrain from putting on the weight. Central Idea: The “freshman 15” is a very popular topic amongst college freshmen, but can be avoided if the proper lifestyle is lived. Method of Organization: Problem-Solution Order INTRODUCTION I. Imagine a sandwich that contains all of this: 2 cheeseburger patties, chicken fingers, mozzarella sticks, bacon, egg, ketchup, mayo, topped off with perfectly crisp French fries. Well, my friends, this sandwich is real and perfectly accessible at any time from the one and only Fat Sandwich Company on State Street in Madison, Wisconsin. II. Mac n’ Cheese pizza at Ian’s, Campus Candy, Babcock Ice Cream, and burritos at Chipotle, are just a few of the many unhealthy options that are quite popular here on campus at the University of Wisconsin. III. While all of these foods that I’ve mentioned sound insanely delicious, they are the direct cause of gaining the infamous “freshman 15.” IV. According to WebMD, “A new study shows that nearly one in four freshmen gain at least 5% of their body weight , an average of about 10 pounds, during their first semester.” V. Lead researcher of the Eating Behaviors study, Sherrie Delinsky from McLean Hospital in Belmont, Massachusetts says, "College is a critical time for people to create good or not good eating habits.” ( http://articles.cnn.com/2009-08-26/health/freshman.15.weight_1_college- students-eating-behaviors-gain-weight?_s=PM:HEALTH )

VI. While this may seem frightening to you all, I am here to inform you why this happens and how to not gain that weight. Imagine a sandwich that contains all of this: 2 cheeseburger patties, chicken fingers, mozzarella sticks, bacon, egg, ketchup, mayo, topped off with perfectly crisp French fries. I’ll basically eat anything that is put in front of me. Coming to Wisconsin from the east coast, I had never even heard of cheese curds.
