Unformatted text preview: CIA Assessment of Allende CIA Assessment if Allende- US has no vital strategic interest in Chile when the CIA evaluates the role in the election- US would suffer tangible economic losses in Chile- Despite the economic losses, however, the CIA says that the world military balance of power will not be altered- One problem could disrupt hemispheric cohesion, psychological impact U.S. Problems with Allende- US had always opposed Allende o Tried to prevent his election, but assassination of key Allende supporter backfires (he was a national hero, the public is outraged)- Ideological problem o Sots not supposed to be ELECTED o Kissinger Allende more threatening than Castro because of this, does not inspire the fear that Castro did because of this- Economic problems o American corporations had invested $1 billion in Chile (mostly in copper)- Strategic Problem o Intelligence positions in the South pacific, considered vital to monitor China, endangered o Domino theory Possible Reactions to Allende...
