Nietzsche Essay Outline I. Explain the passage a. Nietzsche is explaining how, to him, man has degenerated to the “perfect herd animal” b. Democracy has held us in equality, yet we are all held to a mediocre state II. How has man degenerated? a. Emergence of democracy where we are all equal b. We no longer seek greatness; be great, or praise greatness c. Life has become too easy, everything is now given to us, we no longer have to suffer and toil for anything c.i. Suffering strengthens man, however, since we no longer work for what we need, we are softened to life c.ii. Man is now happy with instant gratification, which is a problem c.iii. We no longer want others to suffer (everyone is equal) d. We do not assume responsibility; we place it onto the society e. THE HERD e.i. Lack any individual will e.ii. Live by group instincts e.iii. Total equality; everyone is held at a state of mediocrity e.iv. The herd represses the free spirit e.v. The herd represses the will to power and greatness
