EMGT 314 Exam 1 Practice Problems/Key Concepts To prepare for the objective questions, be sure to be comfortable with definitions for all key terms at the end of Chapters 1-6. In addition, the following key concepts from the end of the chapters may be useful in directing your reading with respect to potential short answers. Chapter 1: 1. Define the term organizational behavior; contrast McGregor’s Theory X and Y. 9 -Organizational behavior – interdisciplinary field dedicated to better understanding and managing people at work. -Mcgregor’s Theory X is all the negative assumptions about people at work such as most people disliked work and most people were had to be punished before they would work and most people preferred to be directed at work. -Mcgregor’s Theory Y basically was a modern and positive set of assumptions about people at work, such as work is a natural activity like play or rest. Or people are capable of self-direction and self-control if they are commited to objective. Or a typical employee can learn to accept and seek responsibility. 2. Contrast and compare human and social capital. P14 -Human capital is the productive potential of one’s knowledge and actions. An example of this is a company paying for employees to go back to school in hopes of developing a better employee. It involves intelligence, visions, skills, self-esteem, creativity, motivation, ethics, and emotional maturity. -Social capital is the productive potential of strong, trusting, and cooperative relationships. An example could be a strong relationship with a boss. Includes shared visions and goals, trust, matual respect, friendships, empowerment, teamwork, win-win negotiations, and volunteering. -Social capital is necessary to tap individual human capital for the good of the organization through knowledge sharing and networking. -They are different as human capital involves individual characteristics and social involves social relationships. 3. Define the term management and identify skills identified by Wilson as characteristics of effective managers. -Management is the process of working with and through others to achieve organizational objectives, efficiently and ethical manner. -According to Wilson an effective manager Clarifies goals and objectives Encourages participation Plans and organizes Has technical and administrative expertise Facilitates work through team building and coaching Provides feedback Keeps things moving Controls details Applies reasonable pressure for goal accomplishment Empowers and delegates
