Question 1 (10 points: 3, 2, 1, 4) Consider problem 7 at the end of Process Selection chapter (page 121). (a) Develop a precedence diagram . (b) Calculate the target cycle time in seconds for desired output of no less than 500 units in 8 hours. The target cycle time should be an integer in seconds. (8 hrs x 60 min/hr x 60 sec/hr) / 500 units = 57.6 sec/unit ≈57 sec/unit. (58 seconds will give less than 500 units of production) (c) Determine the minimum number of workstations needed. N min = Σt / Cycle time = 193/57 = 3.39 ≈ 4 (d) Perform line balancing using the SPT method and calculate line efficiency . For tie-breaking, use alphabetical order of tasks. Please use all tables and show eligible tasks. Efficiency = 100 * 193 / (57 * 4) = 84.6% Question 2 (8 points: 6, 2) Consider the precedence diagram for an assembly operation shown in the figure to the right. (All task times are in seconds). The target CT (Cycle time) is 21 seconds. (a) Perform line balancing using the RPW method . (Tiebreaker: The smallest task number comes first.). Complete all tables. Nmin = 96/21 = 4.57 ≈ 5
