December 6, 2011 Global Challenges: Health 1 Last Week: Science of climate change Impacts: observed and projected Political Responses This Week: Health Social determinants of Health Globalization and Global Health Amount of CO 2 in the air has increased dramatically in the past 150 years (1300’s)-Black Death reduced Europe’s population by 30-60% Disease spread rapidly along the major European trade routes Served as lead into capitalism Devastation of Indigenous Populations in Colonies Germ Theory “The pathogen is nothing, the terrain is everything” –Pastuer Terrain in which health and disease can be understood Social Determinants of Health Socio-economic factors in terms of shaping ill health Spread of infectious diseases will allow for poverty People on less resourced countries have less contact and availability to free sex Inequality Cultural Effects (relationship with health) Look at health outcomes in terms of gender/race Suicide rates—Higher rates for men than women Drugs and alcohol—higher mortality for men than women
