John Hargreaves ANT-101 – IHB Dr. Merryman The Nacirema The way in which this article was written seemed very intriguing, particularly in how the “Nacireman” was portrayed as the foreigner, rather than the norm. The Nacirema tribe of North America consists of nothing more than your average American citizen. Characterized by a thriving market economy, the Nacirema devote time nearly every day to financial quests, spending their hard-earned money on commodities from toothpaste to perfume and cologne. Both Nacirema men and women seem to be preoccupied with their outward appearance. This is said to be the main problem of Nacirema culture. The Nacirema stresses over little things like pimples or a few hairs out of place. They have “shrines” solely dedicated to examine their bodies and make improvements. Hours a day may even be spent in these shrines. The greatest fear of the Nacirema may simply be having a piece of food stuck between their teeth or not smelling the greatest.
