PHYS 15200 Mechanics IUPUI Physics Department Lab03: Newton’s Laws Page 1 of 2 Lab 03: Newton’s Laws OBJECTIVE In this experiment you will be measuring the acceleration of a two-mass system and comparing your results with your calculations based on Newton’s laws. This is a “low-tech” experiment that does not require using Vernier Logger Pro . EQUIPMENT dynamics cart set of standard masses string, 1-2 m in length electronic balance pulley with clamp wooden block paper clips stopwatch Figure 1 PROCEDURE PART I – PRELIMINARY SET-UP 1. Use the electronic balance to mass the cart. Record its value on the worksheet. 2. Locate the spring-loaded extension on the cart. Pointing the cart away from your body, release the spring by pushing the tiny button. The extension should pop out with considerable force, so watch out! 3. Clamp the pulley securely to the lab table as shown in Figure 1. PART II – CONSTANT CART MASS, VARIABLE HANGING MASS
