Reference: Chemistry 1022 Lab Manual, 2 nd Edition 11-1~11-12 Purpose The purpose of this experiment is to determine the order of each reactant in the rate law and perform the necessary calculations by using initial rate data. Procedure: 1. Prepare a large plastic used chemical container. 2. Obtain 100mL of KIO 3 , 300mL of KI and 150mL of pH = 5.6 buffer. Record the total volume of KIO 3 solution. 3. Fill 25-mL burets with KI and KIO 3 solutions for dispensing. For each run use a graduated cylinder to measure the buffer and water. 4. Do runs A 1 , B, C, A 2 , D, E, F, and G. Prepare the first six solutions for A 1 , B, and C. After making the kinetic measurements for these three runs, prepare the six solutions for runs A 2 , D and E and test them. Finally carry out runs F and G. 5. After each kinetic run, be sure to put the leftover solutions in the large plastic used chemical container. At the end of the lab, treat it so that it may be safely disposed of down the drain. 6. Instructions for Data Collection (415 nm) a. Set the Experiment Length = 3 minutes and the Sampling Rate = 30 samples/minute. b. Select 415 nm. Make sure that Abs vs. Time is selected. c. Axis Limits: x-axis (0-3) and y-axis (0-2). d. Quantitatively pour the KI solution into the KIO 3 solution. The time of mixing is time zero. Immediately click the “Collect” button. Rapidly pour the solution back and forth five or six times between the cups to insure complete mixing. Pour some of the mixed solution into a clean dry cuvette and place it into the
