Brian Lau English 111 V Curtis Hisayasu 5/03/07 The Uses of the IMA: Community Fitness centers serve many purposes besides storing gym equipment, and the IMA – the Intramural Activity Center – serves many purposes besides being a fitness center to the UW’s students, staff, and alumni. People go to the IMA for different reasons, but there is an overall assumption that people go to the IMA to exercise and get into shape. The IMA itself is just a place or rather a location because it can’t be moved. The raw construction of the building means nothing unless people use it. And so, a certain “place” or “location” will only mean something when people designate it as their own personal place. For example, the Lander Hall dormitory is just a building with a bunch of rooms with beds, desks, and closets within it. All these rooms are the same until people occupy it. And in my instance, I will take the place that I call my room and decorate it to therefore call it my space. You see, people make space. We live in space. It is a
