1.Write a paragraph reacting to “What Makes Malcolm Gladwell Fascinating”While taking AP English Language and Composition this year, I’ve learned that the best writers treat their argumentative essays, not as something they are forced to write but rather something that engages their mind and has a purpose to digging deeper into the matter. Grant does exactly this when he engages with Malcolm Gladwell’s writing in his article “What Makes Malcolm Gladwell Fascinating”. Right off the bat, he demonstrates to the audience why this topic is meaningful to him and how Gladwell’s books transformed his life. Grant then introduces the common belief that Gladwell is popular because of his storytelling skills. After expanding on this idea a little, he quickly proposes a different idea that says otherwise. Following the beliefs of social psychologist Murray Davis, Grants asserts that Gladwell’s books are fascinating because the ideas themselves are interesting, not the narrative. Grant provides five ideas of Davis’s works that are in Gladwell’s books and does a great job at telling us what makes them so interesting, which we learn is because they all are counterintuitive and not surface level ideas that we already believe strongly. I think this is why I find Grant’s writing so interesting. He discusses a topic that has a simple answer pointing to Gladwell’s writing style, but then finds a less common idea that the audience may question and become curious about. Grant, finishes the article on a note that explains “why we need Malcolm Gladwell to keep writing new books.” I liked this ending because it connects us with the author because he is the one who really craves more books.
