Brian Lau English 111 V Cutis Hisayasu 5/07/07 2.2 The Power of Critiques Part 1 “Inside the List” by Dwight Gardner is a book review of Joel Osteen’s “Your Best Life Now.” Its title is “The Smiling Preacher.” The purpose of this book review is definitely an informational one. There is no reason to suspect that this is some type of editorial because it is not opinionated. Dwight Gardner uses this critique to inform and to make it more appealing in order to get the reader to buy the book. There is proof that this book review is just informational. For example, Dwight Gardner gives information on the author’s background. He gives information pertaining to Joel Osteen about his age and his credibility. Gardner, for instance, states, “…Osteen, who is 41, runs the Lakewood Church in Houston, which in the last five years has become America’s largest church – some 25,000 people attend services there each weekend.” He tries to establish that Osteen is not necessarily a young and inexperienced pastor. By giving the audience his age, he also establishes Osteen’s credibility in saying
