Google Site Reflective EssayThroughout this semester in First-Year Composition, I have been able to develop both personally and academically. I participated in various investigative assignments to research and learn more about myself and about how others live their lives. My beliefs havechanged on several different social topics, which have helped me discover my own sets of values on various issues. The course work required in class has contributed to my greater awareness of other cultures and traditions. This semester, I have learned to contemplate opposing viewpoints and use them to appeal to specific audiences, which further strengthens the proposed point of view within a piece of writing. Overall, I have grown as a writer this semester as it is evident by my improvements in the use of grammar within an essay, consideration of the rhetorical situation that is being created, and multiple strategies for reading comprehension and dissection of an essay. In writing the first essay for this course Counting Calories Can Kill, I experienced a few minor grammatical problems with sentence structure and APA formatting. For example, “…I can still recall the conversation as if it had just happened the yesterday.” Another example of a formatting mistake I made looks like, “The disorder can also be called exercise dependence, exercise addiction or compulsive athleticism” (addiction.com). This in-text citation written correctly should explicitly state the paragraph number, the author and year that the article was published. I would recommend that future students utilize all resources available to them to assist in making in-text citations, such as Purdue Owl; and of course, use reliable sources for grammar and structure if they need additional help. After the grading process for this essay and reflecting on the instructor’s commentarythat was made, I was able to clearly see a few of the areas that my writing needed to grow
in. One of the areas that I identified was my conciseness in writing. I added several unnecessary words to sentences that I took into consideration for future essays. I became more mindful of my word choice and sentence structure which led to improvement. After writing the second essay Culture Helps Cultivate: Relatability & Connection, I was able to apply the corrections to my writing skills. I feel that the improvements were displayed fromthe first piece of writing and into the next because of the higher grade that I received. All of these skills listed above and many others have contributed greatly to the progression of my writing skills during this class and can be reflected in the WPA outcome which is to Develop knowledge of linguistic structures, including grammar, punctuation, and spelling, through practice in composing and revising learned through Knowledge of Conventions.
