I recommend reading Ch 1 this week and Ch 2 next week When can we trust research fndings? Thursday, February 10, 2011 2 How do you judge the scientifc quality oF a research study?- iF you are a frstborn child they are more likley to succeed. a story emerged about the publication oF an article in the leading psychology journal in personality psychology. the article suggests that you can provide scientifc evidence oF ESP... As soon as this was reported, people emailed the ProF and academic psychologists are horrifed by this. How are studies done? How do researchers react to it? Where are the methods in research and what are the weaknesses? When do you generate theories? What are you aloud to make a theory about? How important is it to have a theory to explain research fndings? Thursday, February 10, 2011 3 Ghostbusters clip of Bill Murray as Columbia University Professor. What are the problems with this experiment? video- testing an ESP hypothesis. 2 people being tested for ESP. Psychologist holding a card with a shape on the back. When they get it wrong they get an electric shock. The psychologist doesnt tell the pretty girl when she gets it wrong so she doesnt get shocked. The boy keeps getting them wrong. Studying the effect of negative reinforcement on ESP ability. Problems in the study: he lies. he doesnt give accurate responses and treats the individuals differently. You have to forewarn them if you are going to use electric shocks on them. Experimenter bias: you dont want the experimenter winking at one participant. You dont want the researcher running the experiment because there can be subtle biass that get displayed. you want someone who doesnt know the hypothesis to do the testing. Also! his hypothesis is testing something that might not be a real thing (is ESP even a thing? so how can we test effects of negative reinforcement on them???) Thursday, February 10, 2011 One of psychologys most respected journals has agreed to publish a paper presenting what its author describes as strong evidence for extrasensory perception, the ability to sense future events.- journal that sugggests one type of ESP that can be tested in the lab. Psychologists are campaigning against it! The journal agreed to publish the paper with strong evidence in ability to suspect future events. Daryl Bem 4 By Benedict Carey, New York Times, Jan 5, 2011 Journals Paper ESP Expected to Prompt Outrage Thursday, February 10, 2011 Some scientists say the report deserves to be published, in the name of open inquiry; others insist that its acceptance only accentuates fundamental Faws in the evaluation and peer review of research in the social sciences. - if he uses appropriate methods, etc then we have to publish it! OR (prof on this side); we struggle to be taken seriously as a scientist and this does not help 5 The reactions: Thursday, February 10, 2011...
