1 How can we identify our dominant motivational orientation? Intro Personality March 16, 2011 traits tell us how we behave consistently over time - motivation: why we behave, trying to understand what energizes and directs our behavior in various situations. more context specific and changeable over time. - most important motivation distinction concerns our underlying levels of achievement motivation, power, and intimacy. the big 3 motives. natural thing to do is to wonder about where you would stand in all these motivations, this area is trickier. originally thought we are really not self-aware of our primary mode of orientation is and we cannot describe it accurately. there are ways to asses it but most of us (if you ask us to complete questionnaires) would reach a conclusions on our motives but there would be no correlation to how we see ourselves and how we actually score. we may blind to our motivation. these motives allow us to do well in certain activities and occupations so there may be a situation where someone thinks they are very good at leadership but they are not in reality. 3 The Complexity of Personality (David McClelland’s 1981Model) Behavior = Function of Person and Environment Skills Opportunities Traits Incentives Schemas Constraints Values Motives - in the 1970’s Walter Mischel was making the case that personality psyc is not very useful because behavior is controlled by situation and the scales do not predict successfully our behavior. he said that you can rarely get a correlation higher than .3. McClellands response: yes it is true that any one given personality measure may not predict very well but there are many different personality factors that can influence your behavior and wether you do well, these personality factors are independent of each other and if you look at all of them you can explain the variance. he would say you need to asses different personality aspects Thursday, April 7, 2011

4 Personal Qualities Needed to Be an Effective Clinician + Skills -> empathy, perspective-taking - Traits -> agreeableness, extraversion (neuroticism? + Schemas -> optimism ++ Value -> helping people in distress - Motives -> intimacy and power “Relatively enduring preferences for a broad class of affectively charged incentives, such as having impact or doing things better.” the things we use to test the skill level or things like social intelligence; not the way a person wants to be and not like a personality trait but a skill that you can actually test. ex. decoding peoples emotion from their eyes. There is a test to determine this. this is an aspect of the person that you can asses. He says, we would look at traits and the big 5 are the most important.
