Three Basic Psychological Needs suggests 3 essential psychological needs that must be satisfied in order for us to grow, develop, adjust, to experience well-being. Need to be close to sunlight, need water, and oxygen or we will die. human spirit needs experience of competence, relatedness, and autonomy. Competence – feeling one can effectively bring about desired effects and outcomes. Relatedness – feeling one is close and connected to significant others. Autonomy - - feeling that ones activities are endorsed by and congruent with the self. called self deterministic theory because they focus specifically on the need for autonomy. a lot of theories focus on competence and relatedness but not autonomy. past research shows that competence and relatedness is important but they are unique in saying that autonomy is important. They would suggest that you could be the most competent
