4 at 18 he wanted to go away to University. .. he got a full scholarship somewhere but his mom wanted him at home so he went to Columbia. He didn’t get a full scholarship either so he had to work. He worked at Macy’s. His co-workers seemed to like him but suggest things he could do to improve himself. Alex asked him what K liked to listen to and the guy shook his head and gave him a list of cool tunes. K always wore a yellow shirt and pants and this girl asked him to take him shopping so she took him shopping and he got a pair of jeans. Alex thought K needed to be more assertive and he did karate so K went. K had to buy a Gi (uniform) and speak in Korean. .. K did three classes and he needed rhythm and flexible. in the 3rd one the teacher decided to demonstrate on K. There was a protocol that if you are in pain you would hit your thigh and the person would stop. He did this and it was so painful but he couldn’t remember what to do so he yelled stop and he was so embarrassed. .. K hid the pass he had for the sessions thinking he would take it up later. .. his mom comes into the room crying and she has they pass in his hand and she was so upset that he was becoming a “moonie”. (picture on next slide). when he was in high school there was a religious group by a church in south Korea (it was a cult). they were targeting college students; you were always greeted by them. all parents had such a fear of their child being brainwashed. the group was outlawed (back now). they are famous for you have to give all your belongings to the group and leave your family and have a mass marriage (10 000 boys and 10 000 girls and they match you). K took this as a message. .. if your mom thinks you are a candidate to join a crazy religious cult. . you probably have to work on yourself. Thursday, April 7, 2011
