Lecture 13 Social Problems-Sexuality We are moving from this topic onto the next, but let’s review some main points before we do this: Gender hierarchy is apparent in all nuances of life. Some of the division between men and women can be seen as innocuous. We learn to fit in to gender roles and there are social sanctions to keep us in place. From micro to macro levels, we are given specific tasks as each gender. Post-feminist movements, we have seen more flexibility in the “woman box” and continued rigidity of the “man box.” Women have made great strides achieving higher levels of education and occupation, but still lack in obtaining equal status. Even in combating violence against women, strides have been made. The hypersexualization and objectification of women has increased, and we have also seen this happening to men in a hypermasculine fashion. This hypermasculinity can be linked to boys and men committing violence acts against men and women, boys and girls. The increase in sport and competitive culture can also be seen affecting women. I think the readings again reflect how socialization has influenced gender identity and behavior.
