Brian Lau English 131 Common Book Essay 10-02-06 Use of a Common Book There was mainly one question that stood in my mind as college got closer and closer. “Will I be able to adapt to the college life all on my own?” As I sat in my bed thinking how I will be able to make friends, I remembered that the UW gave all freshmen a common book. They had said that this book will be used to create a common connection with all freshmen. As plain as can see, there really are no shortcomings of instating a common book. Besides maybe spending a bit of money for purchasing about 5,000 books, the investment of these books can have a huge potential of knowledge growth toward all the students. Even through all the potential benefits of a common book, I’ve really disliked reading this year’s UW common book. It made me so furious that the majority of our English classes will be focused around Tracy Kidder’s Mountains Beyond Mountains . When I first started the book, it was alright.
