One of the most fundamental attractions of open source softwar is the presumed avoidance of expensive licensing, maintenance, or revenue share deals with vendors and other service providers. Typically, this upfront and recurring capital expense is the focus in regards to open source and commercial applications. Often the professional services and costs of maintenance are secondary. With open source software, you avoid recurring and scaling software license and maintenance fees. Once your good or service is up and running and you have met the base requirements for it, the cost will be in incremental professional services, on an “as needed” basis. Any other fees or charges will be eliminated in regards to license, maintenance, or revenue share that are commonly found in commercial products or services.
