Ch 18 notes adaptive radiation A burst of genetic divergences from a lineage gives rise to many new species. allele One of two or more forms of a gene; alleles arise by mutation and encode slightly different versions of the same gene product. allele frequency At a specific locus, the abundance of one allele relative to others among individuals of a population. allopatric speciation Speciation route in which a physical barrier that separates members of a population ends gene flow between them. balanced polymorphism The maintenance of two or more alleles for a trait in some populations, as a result of natural selection against homozygotes. bottleneck Severe reduction in population size; can reduce genetic diversity. coevolution The joint evolution of two closely interacting species; each species is a selective agent that shifts the range of variation in the other. directional selection Mode of natural selection; forms at one end of a range of phenotypic variation are favored.
